Barbeque Seasoning

Barbeque seasoning is a blend of spices and flavourings designed to impart a smoky, sweet, and savoury taste characteristic of barbecue. It typically includes ingredients like paprika, onion powder, garlic powder, black pepper, and often sugar or sweeteners, salt, and sometimes smoke flavourings. The exact composition can vary widely depending on the brand and intended use.

Manufacturers use barbeque seasoning to add a distinctive flavour profile to a wide range of savoury foods. It is commonly found in snacks like crisps and nuts, marinades for meats, sauces, rubs for grilling, and ready-to-eat meals. Its primary function is to provide flavour and aroma, enhancing the palatability of the product.

Barbeque seasoning is generally considered a flavouring and not a regulated food additive in the same way as E-numbers. Its components are common food ingredients. While the salt content in some barbeque seasonings can be high, contributing to overall salt intake, the UK government advises adults to consume no more than 6g of salt per day. Excessive consumption of processed foods high in salt, sugar, and fat, which may include barbeque-flavoured items, is linked to various health concerns.
