Medium Chain Triglyceride Powder

Medium chain triglyceride (MCT) powder is a form of dietary fat where the fatty acids have a chain length of 6–12 carbon atoms. It is typically derived from coconut or palm kernel oil through a process of esterification and then spray-drying with a carrier, often maltodextrin or acacia gum, to create a powder.

MCT powder is used as a source of energy and is often added to foods as a fat ingredient. Its powder form makes it easy to incorporate into dry mixes, such as meal replacements, protein powders, and nutritional supplements, where it can contribute to the overall fat content and texture.

Medium chain triglycerides are recognised as a source of dietary fat and energy. The UK's Register of Food Additive Authorisations lists MCTs as authorised food additives, with specific conditions for their use. EFSA has evaluated MCTs and they are considered safe for consumption within specified limits. Evidence suggests MCTs are metabolised differently from longer-chain fats, being more readily used for energy.
