Orange extract

Orange extract is a concentrated liquid flavouring derived from the peel of oranges. It is produced by extracting the volatile aromatic compounds from the orange peel, often using solvents like ethanol or by steam distillation. This process captures the characteristic citrus aroma and taste of the fruit.

Manufacturers add orange extract to impart or enhance the orange flavour in a wide variety of food products. It is commonly found in confectionery, baked goods, beverages, and dairy products. Its intense flavour profile means a small amount can significantly contribute to the overall taste of a food.

Orange extract is generally regarded as a flavouring substance and is not typically listed as a regulated food additive under assimilated Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008 in Great Britain. Flavourings are evaluated for safety, and those used in the EU are subject to authorisation. The safety of flavourings is assessed by bodies like the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). At typical levels of consumption in food, orange extract is not associated with adverse health effects.
