Elemental iron

Elemental iron is pure iron in its metallic form. It is often produced by reducing iron oxides, or through electrolysis. It is used as a source of iron in fortified foods.

Elemental iron is added to foods to increase their iron content, helping to prevent iron deficiency. It is commonly found in breakfast cereals, biscuits, and infant formula. Its metallic taste can be masked by other flavours in the food.

Elemental iron is authorised as a food additive in Great Britain and is listed in the Register of Food Additive Authorisations. It is used as a source of iron, a nutrient essential for human health. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has evaluated iron compounds. While iron is vital, excessive intake can be harmful; however, the amounts typically added to foods are unlikely to cause adverse effects. Evidence on the bioavailability and potential side effects of different iron forms in food fortification is subject to ongoing scientific discussion.
