Thyme oil

Thyme oil is an essential oil extracted from the leaves and flowering tops of the thyme plant (Thymus vulgaris). The extraction is typically done through steam distillation, which captures the volatile aromatic compounds responsible for thyme's characteristic flavour and aroma. It is a concentrated liquid with a strong herbaceous scent.

Thyme oil is primarily used as a flavouring agent in the food industry, imparting a distinct herbaceous and slightly peppery taste. It is commonly found in savoury dishes such as meat products, marinades, sauces, and processed foods like moussaka. Its potent flavour means it is used in very small quantities.

Thyme oil is not considered a food additive under UK law and therefore does not have an E-number or require authorisation on the Register of Food Additive Authorisations. It is recognised for its flavour contribution. Regulatory bodies like EFSA have evaluated essential oils for safety, but specific evaluations for thyme oil's use as a food flavouring are not widely publicised. At typical dietary levels, it is not associated with adverse health effects.
