Popped Maize

Popped maize, commonly known as popcorn, is a type of corn kernel that expands and puffs up when heated. This expansion occurs due to the moisture inside the kernel turning into steam, which builds pressure until the hull ruptures, releasing the starchy endosperm in a fluffy white mass. It is a whole grain snack.

Popped maize is primarily consumed as a snack food, often flavoured with salt, sugar, butter, or other seasonings. Manufacturers use it as a base for sweet and savoury popcorn products, providing a light and crunchy texture that is popular with consumers.

Popped maize is a whole grain and a source of dietary fibre. When prepared without excessive added fats or sugars, it can be a healthy snack. Regulatory bodies in the UK do not classify popped maize itself as a food additive. The Food Standards Agency (FSA) and Food Standards Scotland (FSS) provide guidance on healthy eating, recommending a balanced diet that includes whole grains. Evidence on the health benefits of whole grains, including maize, is generally positive, with links to improved digestive health and reduced risk of certain chronic diseases, as supported by various health organisations.
