Condiments: Nutrition Facts and Calories
Condiments are flavourings and sauces added to food to enhance its taste. This category includes a wide variety of products such as chutneys, relishes, pastes, sauces, dressings and stuffing mixes. Many condiments can be high in sugar, salt, or fat. When choosing condiments, it's helpful to check the nutrition label. Look at the 'Sugars' and 'Salt' content per serving. The NHS Eatwell Guide advises that free sugars should make up no more than 5% of your daily energy intake, and adults should aim for no more than 6g of salt a day. The ingredient list can also provide useful information. Ingredients are listed in descending order by weight, so those appearing earlier have a greater impact on the product's overall composition. For some products, like stuffing mixes, looking for 'wholegrain' or 'wholemeal' can indicate a higher fibre content. All values are shown per 100 g so products can be compared.
